In 2020, we’re cruising to Africa, and our excitement is building! From the rugged and lush western shores to vibrant South Africa, we’re taking it all in. And when you travel to Africa with us, you’ll see even more of this unforgettable continent with our in-depth Land Programs.

These packages will take you deeper into the beautiful and mysterious heart of Africa. Together, we’ll explore South African Winelands, big game reserves, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and more. Plus, we take care of every detail along the way so you can focus on taking it all in.

Here are a few of the highlights you can expect when you join us for an adventure through Africa.

Exploring Johannesburg

The city skyline of Johannesburg, South Africa in the early evening

A city on the verge of a great revitalization, Jozi (as the locals call it) is awash in culture and history. Here, you can stroll down the streets of Maboneng — meaning “place of light” in Sotho — a neighborhood once in decline, now reborn. Grab a coffee from the Bertrand Cafe, take in the rich street-art, explore the Museum of African Design, and visit the markets for some one-of-a-kind South African shopping.

Elsewhere, history buffs will not want to miss Constitution Hill — counted among South Africa’s most important historic sites. Here, visit the Old Fort, the Number Four Jail, and the Women’s Jail. Tours through these impactful locations provide essential context for understanding the South African struggle to overcome apartheid and its journey toward democracy. Pair this visit with a trip to the Apartheid Museum — where multimedia exhibits explain the structure, implementation, and deconstruction of South African apartheid—and you’ll develop a deeper understanding of this complex and tumultuous time in South African history from a fresh new perspective.

Standing in Wonder of Victoria Falls

The Victoria Falls in flood at sunrise

On the Zambezi River along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, one of nature’s most breathtaking wonders towers over the surrounding landscape — Victoria Falls. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and Natural Wonder of the World, Victoria Falls is absolutely awe-inspiring. Locals refer to Victoria Falls as Mosi-oa-Tunya, which translates to “The Smoke that Thunders.” One look (and listen) to these falls and that name comes to life.

At a height of 354 feet and a width of over 5,600 feet, Victoria Falls is not the world’s tallest or widest waterfall, but is the world’s largest sheet of falling water. More than five hundred million cubic meters of water cascade down Victoria Falls per minute in the rainy season — creating columns of spray that can be seen by spectators from several miles away.

Your adventure will take you on a thrilling half-day walking tour around Victoria Falls. With an expert tour guide to lead you, you’ll learn about the history of the falls and the surrounding region, and have plenty of chances to take photos of this iconic landmark. You’ll also join us for a ride on an authentic steam train as it makes its way to the Victoria Falls Bridge. Built in 1905, this parabolic arch bridge offers beautiful views of Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River.

Answering the Call of the Wild on Safari

Africa is well known for the beasts that roam its lands and swim through its waters. When you join us for an Africa Land Program, you can view these incredible animals in their natural habitats while on safari. Depending on the Land Program you choose, you’ll visit the Chobe Game Reserve or the Kapama Game Reserve.

The Chobe Game Reserve is home to Africa’s largest population of elephants, not to mention hippopotamus, crocodiles, and more. On two early morning safaris, you’ll have a chance to see these animals at their most active, while later in the day you can hop aboard a riverboat to cruise the Chobe River for pristine views (and close encounters). Take a guided tour of the park to learn more about its wild residents, then return to the Chobe Game Lodge for a delicious feast!

On the Kapama Game Reserve, there are more than 40 uniquely fascinating mammal species for you to encounter, including the legendary “Big 5”—rhinoceros, lions, African buffalo, leopards, and elephants. In addition, more than 350 species of birds call the reserve home. Here, enjoy thrilling game drives by day and night (with a spotlight to catch a glimpse of nocturnal animals), as well as inspiring views of the Drakensberg Mountains.

Why are our African Land Program safaris so immersive? It’s because we’ve teamed with Micato Safaris — the undisputed leader of the pack when it comes to African safaris. With more than 50 years of experience, Micato is a nine-time winner of the Travel+Leisure award for World’s Best Safari Outfitter, and is a member of the World Savers Hall of Fame. It’s no wonder the company's co-founder, Jane Pinto, is known as Mama Kibritini — She Who Gets Things Done.

Sampling the Best of the Cape Winelands

Wine region near Stellenbosch in South Africa

For nearly 400 years, South Africa has been sharing flavorful wine with the world. Now, you’ll visit the exciting Cape Winelands region and sample some of its premier exports for yourself. Our Land Program will take you to the center of the Winelands — through towns synonymous with South African gastronomy and wine culture. Visit historic wine estates such as Vergelegen, Anura, and Morgenster, while sampling a delicious assortment of wine, olives, olive oils, and cheeses along the way.

While in the Winelands, you’ll also stop for a mouth-watering meal at Tokara Restaurant. This world-renowned restaurant is situated high above the town of Stellenbosch on the Helshoogte Pass. Architecturally stunning, the look of this restaurant is rivaled by two things — the delicious, authentic food they serve, and the stunning mountain and garden views.

The food at Tokara is inspired by plaaskos — South African farm cuisine — infused with modern touches. Their beautifully plated meals taste as incredible as they look, and since you’re in the heart of the Winelands, you’ll have no trouble finding the perfect pairing to elevate your dining experience.

Inside the restaurant, you are treated to five tapestries created by South African artist William Kentridge as part of his Porter series. These sizeable tapestries depict figures connected with objects over world atlas maps and have been described as having Michelangelesque grandeur. Tokara is home to the largest collection of Kentridge's Porter series on public display in the world.
